Happy International Women’s Day: Tyler’s #1 Women In His Life & His #2!

International Womens Day

Posted By: Tyler (YDS Host)
Source: United Nations & United Nations

March 8th is International Women’s Day, What / How / When did this international recognition day start and what is it all about? International Women’s Day was originally called International Working Women’s Day. The first was celebrated in the United States on February 28th, 1909. This day focuses on the general respect, appreciation and love towards women. Some regions celebrate this day honoring women’s economic, political and social achievements.

It started as a Socialist political event, It blended in the culture of many countries such as Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. In other regions some don’t pay much attention to the political side and simply express their love for the women in their life that they respect and value. Some regions still celebrate it as a political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations and highlight the political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide and brings these topics out and examined in a hopeful manner.

The 2013 United Nation’s  International Women’s Day theme is “A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women.”  While International Women’s Day 2013 has declared this year’s theme as “The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum.” The International Committee of the Red Cross is drawing attention to the plight of women in prison. All over the world, women and girls living behind bars often face particular hardship in terms of protection, privacy and access to basic services, including health care.

Who’s Your #1 Women In Your Life?

Tyler And Mom Red Remote 2 Year Anniversary Show

Some people would say the #1 women in their life is their wife, girlfriend, sister, best friend…Your answer depends on your personal life situation, everyone’s life and story is different and that’s one of the coolest things in life, There’s something unique and different about all of us. The #1 women in my life is my mom. My mom has taught me so much and we’ve been through a lot but I love her and there’s no one that could replace her in my life. She is a strong women and has always been there for me. I love you mom and don’t worry about what other people say about us. As long as we’re together and happy, that’s all that matters right?

The #2 Women In My Life

Tyler & Nana (Campus Martius Ice Skating)

The #2 women in my life would have to be my grandma, My grandma is a very strong individual and no matter what always attempts to think positive even during the hardest times in her life. She’s a perfect role model for anybody, No matter what obstacle she battles or faces, She looks at life with a positive feeling and that’s something that I would like to take from her and apply that positive vibe to my own life. Here’s my favorite quote that my grandma said to me during a meaningful conversation about life “If you care what other people think of you, you are living in their prison.”

Breaking News: Michigan Governor Rick Snyder Declares Financial Emergency in Detroit

Posted By: Tyler B. (YDS Host)

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has declared a financial emergency in Detroit, paving the path for an emergency manager to step in unless city officials can change his mind over the next 10 days.

Snyder made the announcement earlier today. He says his decision on whether to appoint an emergency manager will come after a March 12th hearing, a date given to Mayor Dave Bing’s office.

Snyder said he already has a candidate in mind for the emergency manager position, but declined  to release details about that person.

The move was all but guaranteed after a review team reported to Snyder on Feb. 19 that Detroit was in a financial emergency and needed the state’s help to emerge from it. A review team first looked into Detroit’s books in December 2011, but stopped short of declaring a financial emergency.

The second team began to pore over the city’s financial records this past December.

Detroit faces a $327 million budget deficit, more than $14 billion in long-term debt and persistent cash flow issues.

FOX 2 political analyst says it was important for Snyder to give city officials their 10-day appeal right under Michigan. “This administration is very sensitive about due process, giving the city a chance to respond before he pulls that trigger,” says Skubick.

Transcript of Governor Rick Snyder’s speech:

I appreciate everyone coming together to have this discussion today. I look at today as both a sad day, a day that I wish would never have happened in the history of the city, but also a day of optimism and promise. And before I get into the specifics, I think it’s important that we all step back and set the stage as to where we’ve been and where we are, but also where we need to go.

If you think about Detroit, Detroit was the most successful city in the United States, for many years. We put the country on wheels, we put the world on wheels. We were the arsenal of democracy. And in 1950 Detroit had 1.8 million people, at one point it was recognized as the most prosperous city in the entire United States. And you step back and look at that and where we are today. If you go across the country and talk to people, there’s probably no city that’s more financially challenged in the entire United States.

If you looked at the quality of services, the citizens, it’s ranked among the worst. So we went from the top to the bottom, over the last 50 or 60 years. It was a long process. And one of the things I would say, during this process, even over the last few years, we should waste no time on blame, or fighting or discussing how we got there. The point is, this is where we’re at today. The question is it’s time to say we should stop going downhill. It is time to say we need to start moving upward with the city of Detroit.

There have been many good people that have had many plans, many attempts to turn this around. They haven’t worked. The way I view it, today is the day to call all hands on deck. To say, there’s been too much fighting, too much blame, not enough resources, not enough people working together to say let’s resolve these issues. Because the key answer I believe all of us want to get to is growing the city of Detroit.

In order to bring all of those resources to bare, I believe it’s appropriate to declare the city of Detroit in financial emergency, based on the review team report. But again, I don’t view it as simply looking at the numbers because if you look at the financial numbers, it’s not hard to justify that conclusion. There’s a short term cash crisis. There’s long term liabilities that need to get resolved. There needs to be a structure for long term success. But again, it’s not just about numbers, this is about people. There are 700,000 people in the city of Detroit that are suffering, that we need to turn around.

But I would also say is I’ve talked about the negative things, we need to remember there are a lot of great, positive things going on in Detroit. And the long term answer to this solution is not to dwell on the negative. We need to use a phrase I live by ‘Re-allow us positive action’. We need no blame, no credit. We need to simply solve this problem and head towards a bright, exciting Detroit.

And what does Detroit of the future look like to me? And again this is something the citizens of Detroit should define, not me. But what does it look like? We’re already seeing exciting things, in midtown, downtown, the river front, exciting revitalization. But the only long term solution to Detroit is to say we can also say those exciting things are coming to the neighborhoods of Detroit, to the people living in those neighborhoods. We need a Detroit where eventually people are moving into the neighborhoods of Detroit because they want to raise their family there. They see real estate that has increasing property value. They see good schools, they see safe schools. We need a Detroit for the people living in Detroit that can say my kids can get a job, so they can buy a good house in Detroit and raise my grand kids in Detroit, and be able to have them walk the school, and to have that environment for success.

If you think about it over the last few decades, the current system has not been working. We have not stopped the decline. It is time to say this is the time for us not to argue or to blame, but to come together as Detroit, Michigan, not Detroit versus Michigan. And bring all our resources to bare, to say let’s just solve the problem. Let’s solve the financial issues, let’s solve the service issues, and let’s grow Detroit. Now the process.

With this determination today, there’s a 10-day appeals period that will go through Monday, March 11 where the mayor and city council can appeal. They have the right, I appreciate it. I’ll wait to see what they want to do. If they decide to appeal, they’ll be a hearing on Tuesday, March 12. Following that I need to make a re-determination to continue this path or to change paths. If I continue on this path, I go to the emergency loan board, who will then select an emergency manager. So, that’s the process.

But beyond the process, beyond the numbers, come back to relentless, positive action. Haven’t we had enough of people fighting among themselves or blaming someone or watching declining services, and watching people suffer? Now is the time to rally together to say there’s a new, better way of doing things and let’s build Detroit and do it as a team. And be proud and show the rest of the world that Detroit was the best. We know how to do it. We lost that formula, but we can gain it back and do it again. It won’t be exactly the same, but it can be that great place where kids can grow up, they can go see their grandparents and have a wonderful life. So, thank you.

YDS Upcoming Artists: Foreign (A.K.A Brandon Nicholas)

There’s always local rappers, But the fact of the matter is the REAL reason we started this segment on our website is because we feel that local, talented DETROIT artists aren’t getting the respect and showcase they deserve! It’s all about the artists who are famous, signed and have money…Well Detroit and Michigan have very talented artists from all different music genres. In this weekend’s edition of YDS Upcoming Artists we are featuring a very talented teenager from our own backyard. If you haven’t heard Foreign rap yet, you are definitely missing out in my personal opinion. Foreign isn’t your typical, average rapper…He writes about things that mean something to him and he is somebody I know on a personal level and one of my good friends. I wouldn’t take the time to highlight him on this blog if I believed he wasn’t good, he’s got potential and I want everybody to know and have heard of him before he becomes famous and making it big!  When I first heard him rap…I knew he was TALENTED and GIFTED.

Follow Brandon Nicholas also known as “Foreign” on Twitter @GreetTheConnect.

Brandon Nicholas also known as Foregin is not somebody who just says they can rap, or somebody who is a wannabe rapper…Brandon is a very talented 18-year-old from Detroit, Michigan. Brandon has been interested in music ever since 8th grade in middle school when he was only 12-years-old ( 6 years ago). Brandon has been writing his own music ever since 2009 and he still is writing his own songs now! Brandon can be described as a musical, wise, respectful, caring and different type of person, a person that you don’t run in to much often! Brandon plans on attending Ohio State University or Eastern Michigan University and studying

When asked about Brandon’s musical idol, Brandon told us that Tupac was his musical idol. Brandon said Tupac is his musical idol because “Tupac is both of the voices, Tupac spoke on what people were scared to speak of and he didn’t care what people thought about him. Also, He wasn’t just a rapper, he was a poet and not many people know that. Another reason is because he had a lot of money from his highly successful career but he still chose to keep things simple and he didn’t care about money like most artists now a days care about. Tupac wasn’t all about money and I respect that a lot about him.” When asked about who influences him to pursue his dreams, Brandon said “My mom would have to be the  BIGGEST person that has influenced me to pursue my dreams because my mom raised me and without my mom I wouldn’t know what I’d do. I have learned a lot of things that I know today from my mom and I watched her make the most out of what we had and she taught me how to make something out of nothing.”

We asked Brandon Nicholas what his favorite thing about music was and he said “My favorite thing about music is hearing my voice and being able to listen to the stories that people tell and connect and picture how I can relate to other artists songs and how they can connect to my real life experiences. Brandon also shared with us that he describes writing lyrics and recording songs as a passion for him because “It’s a way for me to express my feelings and relieve stress.”

Brandon told us that his favorite Detroit artists would have to be “Eminem, Blade Icewood and Big Herk.”  In his free time Brandon enjoys hanging out with his family and friends and cooking. If Brandon doesn’t go into the music industry as a career in life, he plans on continuing writing songs and may take culinary classes to become a chef! He said that if he could collaborate with any artist he would choose J-Cole because “I like rappers that speak about hard times that I can relate to, we both know the the struggle is. Like for example, How you can go from having nothing or very little and then turning that into something. J-Cole also knows how it feels to be down on your last and ANY rapper who puts all of that onto a track for everybody to hear…That’s brave and he expresses what he’s been tru. Most people think haha it’s funny to be broke but overall you can go from broke to being something and eventually if your dedicated you make it at the end and everything works out for you.”

Stay tuned for Brandon “Foreign” Nicholas’ newest mix-tape “The Introduction” scheduled to be released late January.

Brandon describes his songs and lyrics to others as “Inspirational, Motivating, Relate-able and up-lifting.”
When asked about what we can expect from Brandon in the future he shared with us that his newest mix-tape ”The Introduction” will be dropped late January. The Young Detroit Show will have a follow up interview with Brandon to talk about his mix-tape when it gets closer to the release date. In five years from now Brandon would like to see himself being a world changer and bringing hip hop back…He want’s to be the person that is different and has potential. Brandon also explained to us how he’d prefer to be his own person and be an independent artist. Brandon also said he’d like to give a shout-out and huge thanks to Jesus, his mom, his dad and YDS Host Tyler Beltz for supporting him and helping him  continue to live his dreams. Brandon also is not only a rapper but he also knows how to produce, master and records tracks as well.

We like to thank Brandon for allowing us to interview him for our YDS Upcoming Artists segment and we will continue to provide you follow up interviews and let all of you know what’s going on with Brandon “Foreign” Nicholas. We’d like you guys to also follow Brandon on Twitter @GreetTheConnect to stay connected with him! We’ll have a follow up interview to talk with Brandon about his newest upcoming UNRELEASED mix-tape titled “The Introduction” as well as post some videos of him rapping COMING SOON ON YDS!

Detroit Negative Spotlight: Tonight Show Host Jay Leno Makes a Stab at the Recent Detroit Police Chief Scandal

Detroit is in the NEGATIVE media-light once again and this time around it involves Jay Leno. The Tonight Show host Jay Leno recently brought up the scandal between ex-Detroit Police chief Ralph Godbee and his relationship with a female worker. Ralph Godbee has since resigned and no longer works for the Detroit Police Department.

Jay Leno brought it up during The Tonight Show and said “Well, the police chief of Detroit was suspended after a female police officer said she had sex with him in exchange for a promotion. Uh-Oh. And of course people are stunt. Detroit has a police department?”

TYLER’S OPINION: I think it is unfortunate that Detroit is going thru what we currently are going thru and who knows how long it’ll take for us to grow and become a better and safer city. Obviously, these key and very important issues that need to be discussed and handled properly and I understand people are going to talk about it but as for Jay Leno, He act’s like he supports Detroit and our automotive industry and us trying to be on the path of recovery but then anytime something NEGATIVE happens to or something that relates to Detroit he turns around and uses it to his advantage on his show for laughs and ratings. Either you support Detroit or you DON’T!…You can’t be stuck in the middle between this kind of thing. Also, It’s a shame that Detroit is recognized for the amazing things we have and the amazing talent and residents that do live here, instead everybody thinks of Detroit as guns, crime, un-safe, gangs, drugs and violence…There’s more to Detroit then just that but the media fails to recognize us and our city for the good things that we do have!

Chasing Mavericks: Emotional, Inspiring & Living Your Dreams

Source: Wikipedia
Posted By: Tyler B. (YDS Host)

Introduction:

On Wednesday, October 3rd I got the chance to attend an advance screening of  the movie “Chasing Mavericks” starring Jonny Weston as Jay Moriarity and Gerard Butler as Frosty Hesson. The film is directed by Curtis Hanson and Michael Apted. I got the chance to see this film with our YDS BULLYING reporter Ashley. Check out my review and my thoughts on the movie below and stay tuned for Ashley’s thoughts and review on the film based from a swimmer / water bug’s point of view!

Chasing Mavericks is based on the life of Jay Moriarity. It follows his dreams to surf Northern California’s most dangerous wave, and Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler), the local legend who takes Jay under his win in order to train him to survive surfing Mavericks. In the course of Moriarity’s training Jay and Frosty develop a special unique friendship like any other friendship before.

Who is Jay Moriarity?:

Jay Moriarity

Jay Moriarity is an actual surfer from Santa Cruz, California. He was an accomplished surfer, waterman, and adventurer. As a surfer, he made his reputation surfing Mavericks in Half Moon Bay, California. At age 16, he was made internationally famous when his wipeout at Mavericks was caught on film and made the cover of Surfer (magazine). Although a successful competitor, Jay is remembered as a soul surfer, winning many sportsmanship awards throughout his career. Moriarity died on June 15, 2001, in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the island Lohifushi in the Maldives, drowning in an apparent diving accident. In Lohifushi for an O’Neill photo shoot, he went free-diving with members of the Brazilian crew but was not seen after. Details of his death are uncertain but he was reported to have gone farther down the buoy rope than the others, practicing his breath holding and meditating on the ocean floor 45 feet below the surface. His body was recovered later that evening on the surface near the dive site. Rest in peace Jay Moriarity, from watching the film it seems like you and I are so much alike and we’d probably be really good friends. I also learned that me and you have the same thing in common, we won’t ever let somebody get in our path of destroying our dreams that mean the world to US. This blog is dedicated to YOU Jay.

The Beginning of the Movie:

The movie starts off with 8-year-old Jay Moriarity and Kim on a date playing with a dog and a ball, the ball went rolling into the ocean and Jay decided to go after the ball and the girls’ dog. I got the impression that something was going to happen to Jay because he was so little and couldn’t swim that great but shockingly Frosty Hesson (played by Gerard Butler) who was known for being a very good surfer came to the rescue and saved little Jay. But that’s just the BEGINNING…

The Emotional Side:

I don’t wanna give away the entire movie because then there would be NO REASON for you to go and see it when it comes out! But some emotional scenes for me was this one particular scene where Jay’s dad was beating and hitting his mom and Jay wouldn’t let that happen to his mom because he cared about her and loved her so he attacked his dad and they were fighting until the cops came. This scene stuck out to me for many various reasons because Jay is a character that I can relate to very well. In the movie, Jay’s dad left him and his mom when Jay was little and that’s the same thing that my dad did to me and my mom. Also I feel that me and Jay are so much alike and we care so much about our moms. Another emotional scene that stuck out to me is when Frosty’s (the local surfer who was training Jay) wife Brenda clasped to the floor, passed out and died. Jay was the one that called 911 because she had a stroke. This was sad because something like this happened to a very important person to me and I thought this person I’m talking about in my life was gone forever and that will be one day that I will never forget. I’m very emotional for those of you that don’t know so those two scenes I did get teary eyed while watching the movie screening.

Remember you can check out Chasing Mavericks in a local theater near you on Friday, October 26th, 2012! Check out the slideshow of pics related to this movie!

The Cage is back and this time around we’re featuring fighter Mario Aguilar from Ecorse, Michigan!  Check out our recent Q & A with Mario Aguilar as we talked to him about what it’s like being a fighter and what his advice is to people out there interested in being a fighter!(T – Tyler and M – Mario)

T: When did you first become interested in becoming a fighter?

M: When I was 7 years old and I saw the movie Bloodsport for the first time.

T: What was one of your favorite fights you fought at and why?

M: Hands down I’d say WXC’s Island Rumble. Best fight atmosphere in my opinion!

T: Who is your favorite opponent to fight?

M: I’d have to say Matthew “The Bolt” Holt. We’ve fought twice. The first time we fought we went to round 3 and he won via gnp. The second fight was a 3 round war that was called a draw. I can’t even call that fight but damn was it fun!

T: When is your next fight?

M: Nothing set yet, but I’m shooting for March!

T: What is your advice to people out there who are interested in making a career out of fighting?

M: My advice is stay consistent and never give up, Persistence is the biggest key!

T: What does your daily workout schedule look like?

M: well basically 8 hours every 2 days of whatever my sensei (Master Dimitri Paul) tells me to do. Its always different and intense.

T: What is your typical every-day meals look like?

M: lol my diet is horrible. Burgers tacos etc. I should be fat I’m ashamed to say. MMA keeps me thin.

T: What do you usually do to prepare for your fights?

M:  I try to put myself in a type of trance. The same kind of trance you would go into if you were drawing a picture or playing a instrument. I’ve learned that only when your in the self exspressive state of mind can you fight at your peak potential.

T: Where would you like to fight at?

M: I’d like to fight in a cage on a navy aircraft carrier…sounds fun.

T: If you could fight anybody who would you like to fight?

M: And as of right now I think it would be awesome to be able to one day fight Jose Aldo.

Thanks to Mario Aguilar for allowing us to chat with him about his fighting career. We’ll keep you posted when Mario’s next fight is! And as always, remember The Cage section of the Young Detroit Show’s website is your source for information on fighters from all over the world!
